A HZAU-UCD bilateral symposium on genomics and crop genetic improvement  |

There is a recent agreement between Huazhong Agricultural University and University of California, Davis to strengthen the relationship in cooperation of research and training. Both universities have traditional strength in research programs and training curricula in genetics and crop breeding, and recently developed strong programs in research and training in genomics, molecular biology and biotechnology.
A bilateral symposium will be held during September 6-8, 2005 in Wuhan on the campus of Huazhong Agricultural University, to exchange information on research and development in genomics and genetic improvement of crop plants, and to discuss possible collaboration opportunities between faculties in the two universities. About 20 scientists from each side will attend the meeting. This symposium will be dedicated to Dr. Robert W. Allard in honor of his contribution to this field in general and in recognition of his contribution to research and curriculum development in both universities. A number of former UCD alumni and former associates of Dr. Allard working in other institutions will also be invited.

Rice is the most important food crop in the world and an important experimental system for genomics research. The completion of the genome sequence of rice, in December 2004, opens a new and exciting chapter in our quest to functionally characterize all of the approximately 50,000 genes in rice. A systematic approach to characterizing these genes will allow us to dissect and understand the regulatory networks and evolutionary selection controlling such complex traits as yield, biotic and abiotic stresses, reproductive barriers, epigenetics and flowering time. To celebrate the completion of the rice genome and learn about the latest developments in structural, functional and evolutionary genomics research we will host the 2nd Annual Symposium on Rice Functional Genomics in Tucson, Arizona on November 15-17th.

The last decade has seen rapid advances in genome research in a large number of crop species, which has great implications for crop improvement. In particular, the development of high-density molecular marker linkage maps has greatly empowered identification and mapping of agriculturally important genes and also enhanced the exploitation of the exotic germplasms in breeding programs. Molecular marker-assisted selection has now become a routine technique widely used in breeding programs, which greatly improved the efficiency of selection. Integration of transformation into breeding programs has brought new opportunities for acquiring novel traits that otherwise cannot be obtained via conventional breeding approaches.
The recent completion of the sequencing project of the Arabidopsis genome, the near completion of the rice genome, and the progresses of genome mapping achieved in numerous plant species have opened enormous opportunities for crop genetic improvement. The objective of this symposium is to provide a venue for reviewing and exchanging the developments in ideas, approaches, innovations and progresses in plant breeding programs making use of the achievements in genomic research. The conference will feature plenary speeches by world-renowned experts in the field, oral and poster presentations contributed by the participants.
Wuhan is a large city located in a major agricultural area in central China. The city is well blended with a long history, rich traditional Chinese culture and modern industrial development. It is also the home for a number of academic institutions working on various aspects of plant genomics and crop genetic improvement, which have made significant progresses in the last decade. With the repaid development in biotechnology, Wuhan is an ideal place for hosting this international symposium.

作物遗传改良国家重点实验室依托于华中农业大学,1992年3月开始建设,1994年通过国家验收并正式对外开放。1996年被评为优秀国家重点实验室。2001年再次被评为优秀国家重点实验室。现任实验室主任是中国科学院院士张启发教授、实验室学术委员会主任是中国工程院院士傅廷栋教授。实验室下设资源创新与育种研究、细胞工程、分子生物学三个分室。 作物遗传改良国家重点实验室覆盖作物学、生物学、园艺学三个一级学科博士点及博士后科研流动站,与生命科学技术学院、植物科学技术学院、园艺林学学院有十分紧密的联系。研究对象涉及水稻、玉米、油菜、棉花、小麦等主要农作物和果树、蔬菜等部分园艺作物。

“948”重大项目参与“全球水稻分子技术育种”  |

1997年底,国际水稻研究所基因组研究室主任黎志康博士提出了开展"全球水稻分子技术育种"的设想,得到了该所领导、有关出资机构以及一批国际知名学者的积极支持,随即被正式列入国际水稻研究所的工作计划并已组织实施。我国学者张启发、罗利军等也参与了该计划的部分策划工作。该计划的基本思想是集中来自世界上各水稻主产国的丰富多样的品种资源,通过大规模杂交、回交和分子标记鉴别选择相结合的方法,将这些品种资源基因组片段导入到各国的优良品种中去,从而实现优良基因资源在分子水平上的大规模的国际交流,培育出大量的近等基因导入系。各国的育种单位在此基础上根据自己的育种目标,从中筛选出所期望的育种材料,培育出新品种。由于这个计划的巨大潜在价值,各国科学家响应很热烈。到目前为止,已有包括我国在内的12个水稻主产国参与了这一计划,其中先期启动的一些国家已经得到了较高世代的回交材料。
我国科学家参加这一研究工作的目的为充分利用这一国际合作的机会,广泛地引进和大规模地利用国际优良稻种资源,培育一批适应我国各稻作区的生态环境条件,并满足我国农业发展长期需要的优良品种,创造出一大批具有优良性状的种质资源。
